Have you ever seen Hyun Bin do sit-ups?
I’ve always been a fan of 10 Asia’s articles, it’s a different form of entertainment for me, from the content they report / infer / hint / hesitate about… and their photographs and graphics are straight to the point. Well… their point.

Q: Have you seen “Secret Garden”? Hyun Bin’s a hit, totally.
A: What do people see, I wonder… No matter how free I am, would I actually want to spend weekend nights watching the love stories of other people? Isn’t it loads better to watch Premier League matches with some beer?
Q: Yaa… if you switch on the TV and don’t watch Hyun Bin, you are just wasting TV signals y’know..
A: Oh really? Then I’d rather not watch TV. *tsk*
Q: Don’t be such a spoilsport, just try watching for once. Secret Garden is not popular without reason. Just look at last week’s scene where Hyun Bin did sit-ups, that shut up all the anti’s.
A: What’s all the fuss about his sit-ups? Is it so great that it became one of the top (internet) search words? Did he do sit-ups while he was tied up in chains? Or did he do sit-ups while clinging onto somebody else, like what judoka Kim Ju Jin did before he went on to win his Asian Games gold medal? Don’t tell me all this fuss happened just because he did sit-ups in the gym..
Q: From your point of view, of course it’s merely ordinary sit-ups.
A: It isn’t?
What? Those eye contact and saying all that dialogue? These sit-ups are not done for exercise!
Q: That’s what I’ve been trying to say. When Ha Ji Won holds down Hyun Bin’s legs, every time Hyun Bin sits up he gives THE eye-contact. With a secretive little smile.
A: Jeez.. wha-a-t? Smi~~le? Smi~~~~~le??* Yaa, yaa. You are already smitten by him ever since the gym. Anybody knows that if you smile during exercise, you can’t exercise your muscles properly. A proper workout is when you groan, “Aigoo this is killing me” instead of ‘a secretive little smile’. Whether a sit-up or a push-up, there are no exceptions!
Q: That’s why he did it by sitting up slowly. Sitting up slowly, straightening his body, all the while with the meaningful gaze…
A: Wha-a-t? Slow~~ly? Slow~~ly?? Slow~~~~~ly?* Yaa, it’s only effective if you do it faster. Of course there are other exercises that is better done slowly, but for sit-ups, the faster the better… For example, if you hurry through push-ups or chin-ups your body will have opposite reactions and you will end up with very awkward movements. Performing these exercises, the slower the better. But for sit-ups, where your butt is stuck on the ground, there’re no worries for opposite reactions! Especially for those who workout regularly, slow-motion sit-ups have no effect on your abs!
Q: So wouldn’t it be worse if you stop right after a sit-up and then start talking?
A: Of course! You mean he must talk during his sit-ups?
Q: Yeah. He said,
“Ms Gil Ra Im, from which age did you start being so pretty?” Gyaaaak!
A: O.M.G. He must be happily doing his sit-ups eh? When doing a sit-up, the times when your abs are relaxed are either when lying flat on the ground or sitting right up — i.e. the only 2 moments when you can rest during a sit-up. That’s why (in a good sit-up) your body is usually in a ready-to-launch position and you touch your knees with your chin or elbows in quick repetition. If you pause everytime you do a sit-up… that’s not exercise at all.
Now, if he manages to do all his talking while he is 45 degrees halfway up, now that’s a sit-up to marvel about.
Instead he’s just whispering “Ms Gil Ra Im blahblahblah” when his body is fully relaxed…
Q: Yaa! That wouldn’t look cool at all. Seeing Hyun Bin placing both his hands on his chest obediantly, meekly, before lunging forward with a smile — that’s how you capture the hearts of viewers (and Ra Im ^^)
A: To me, he has demonstrated all that shouldn’t be done during a sit-up. Do you know how to train the ab muscles of children who’ve never done a sit-up before? They stretch their arms towards their knees when sitting-up. Sit-ups work because the weight of the upper-body exerts the ab muscles, which becomes harder the further your arms are from your lower body. That’s why the typical sit-up pose is to place your hands on both sides of your head. To make it even harder, you can raise your arms up in a ‘mansae’ (banzai, hooray) pose. Or wear weights behind your head. Merely placing his hands on his chest? That’s for beginners.
Q: Are you Hyun Bin’s anti-fan? Despite all those shortcomings, the very fact that to be able to do sit-ups with Hyun Bin beside you, how enjoyable the exercise would be. If Hyun Bin is doing sit-ups, I’ll be grateful to hold down his ankles for the entire day.
A: ‘Scuse me… if Ha Ji Won holds down my ankles I can do hundreds, thousands of sit-ups readily! No, she doesn’t even have to hold anything, even if she pushes me backwards I can still do millions of sit-ups!
Q: Push you backwards? Because she hates looking at your face?
A: That’s soooo childish of you… Not ‘cos of my face, but to exercise my abs to the fullest. As I said earlier, the hardest sit-ups is to do them while raising your arms above your head or wearing weights behind your head. If you push someone backwards while I’m rising forward, that will really exercise my abs. Frankly, whether the person performing the sit-up or the person anchoring him, the exercise itself is complex — you need a good partnership in order to have an effective exercise. *smug*
Q: Sounds dubious… So it’s ok if I touch Hyun Bin during our good partnership exercise? Waa… that sounds like a great idea!
A: Yaa… yaa… Lemme teach you something even better. The best way to stimulate abs is to do sit-ups ALONE.
Q: Alone? Sit-ups can’t be completed alone!
A: Who said sit-ups are for 2? The main aim of sit-ups is to exercise your abdominal muscles, as we usually use more of the spinal cord muscles behind the abs. Thus there’s a risk of injuring your waist when doing sit-ups, though in my experience I doubt that’s really possible. To maximise the workout on your abs, try to reduce the force exerted by the back muscles. That’s what you call ‘crunches’, done while you lie on your back. In sit-ups, only the tail end of the spine touches the ground while the rest of the body has to rise up, while during crunches, only your upper abs are exerted as you rise with your entire back is on the ground. Crunches exert less back muscles than sit-ups but concentrates more exertion on the abs. Because nobody is anchoring you, you don’t have to exert against the strength of your lower body. To just exercise your upper abs, its better to lie down alone with your legs in the air, like a leg raise, and lunge forth and backwards. Anyway, I’m just saying that when you don’t have a partner, this ab-exercise is more effective than a sit-up.
Q: Fine, make your 6 packs alone and live a life of contentment playing around with your mates.
A: Ok, you grab my ankles then. You’re not even saying anything helpful, telling me to do everything by myself?
Q: If I anchor you, you won’t nag anymore and exercise hard right?
A: 10 million sit-ups?
*this is the trademark sneer that Park Young Jin does in his Couple Debate corner in Gag Concert.
