While translating Gil Ra Im’s brain diagram, I had to deal with 김수한무 거북이와 두루미 삼천갑자 동방삭 치치카포 사리사리센타 워리워리 새프리카 무두셀라 구름이 허리케인 담벼락 서생원에 고양이 바둑이는 돌돌이, i.e. Ju Won’s chant when he’s losing his grip. This 80-word phrase (used Twitter’s counter ^^;) actually comes with an ancient story. It had such a sad ending that I burst out laughing.

Enjoy~:

A long, long time ago, a man who’s part of generations of only sons, consulted a name-specialist to give his only son a name symbolic of a long life. But no matter how the name-specialist suggested, the man insisted, “longer… make it longer”. It became a name that took a long time to pronounce  in anybody’s life.

His name was Kim~~suhanmoo keobugiwa durumi samcheongabja Dong Bang Sak Chichigapo Sarisarisaenta Woriwori Saepeurika Moodoosella gureumi heorikaein dambyeorak seosaengwonae goyangyi badookineun Doldolri.

One day, Kim~~suhanmoo keobugiwa durumi samcheongabja Dong Bang Sak Chichigapo Sarisarisaenta Woriwori Saepeurika Moodoosella gureumi heorikaein dambyeorak seosaengwonae goyangyi badookineun Doldolri fell into the river.

A passer-by cried for help.

“Heelp!! Kim~~suhanmoo keobugiwa durumi samcheongabja Dong Bang Sak Chichigapo Sarisarisaenta Woriwori Saepeurika Moodoosella gureumi heorikaein dambyeorak seosaengwonae goyangyi badookineun Doldolri fell into the river!”

However, during the time he was crying for help, Kim~~suhanmoo keobugiwa durumi samcheongabja Dong Bang Sak Chichigapo Sarisarisaenta Woriwori Saepeurika Moodoosella gureumi heorikaein dambyeorak seosaengwonae goyangyi badookineun Doldolri drowned.

Thanks to Naver Jishik’s 76shkim님 and 액터정님, here are the explanations to those fateful 80 words:

김수한무 (金 壽限無 : 김은 성이고 목숨에 한계가 없다는 뜻)

Kim Soo-han-moo : it’s Hanja literally means  surname ‘Kim’, ‘Age-is-Infinite’.

Keo-bu-gi-wa du-ru-mi: the tortoise and the crane (bird, not machine), 2 of the traditional 10 symbols of longevity.

Sam-cheon-gab-ja Dong Bang Sak: long time ago, there lived a guy called Dong Bang Sak in China. He lived for sam-cheon-gab-ja = 3000 x 60 = 180000 years.

Chi-chi-ga-po: name of somebody who lived a long life somewhere in Africa *lol*

Sarisarisaenta, Woriwori, Saepeurika: names of legendary people who lived a long life *rofl*

Moo-doo-sael-la : konglish for Methuselah, who lived for 969 years, according to the Bible’s Genesis 5:27

gu-reum-yi: ‘clouds’, ‘cos they symbolise a never-ending existence; in a way, lives longer than Methuselah ^^; thus it’s better to be a cloud than Methuselah

heo-ri-kae-in: konglish for ‘hurricane’, shows the meaninglessness of clouds’ existence if they can be blown away by hurricanes, thus it’s better to be a hurricane than a cloud.

dam-byo-rak: ‘wall’, showing the meaninglessness of a hurricane if you stay intact despite being blown, thus it’s better to be a wall than a hurricane.

seo-saeng-won-ae: ‘mouse’. Drills holes in wall, causing weakened wall to collapse in a hurricane, thus… it’s better to be a mouse than a wall.

go-yang-yi: ‘cat’. (You get the drift)

ba-duk-yi-neun: ‘dog’

Doldolri : doggie’s name..

sometimes I wonder if Ju Won has AS…

(excerpts from Wikipedia’s Asperger’s Syndrome Characteristics entry)

Unlike those with autism, people with AS are not usually withdrawn around others; they approach others, even if awkwardly. For example, a person with AS may engage in a one-sided, long-winded speech about a favorite topic, while misunderstanding or not recognizing the listener’s feelings or reactions, such as a need for privacy or haste to leave. This social awkwardness has been called “active but odd”. This failure to react appropriately to social interaction may appear as disregard for other people’s feelings, and may come across as insensitive. However, not all individuals with AS will approach others. Some of them may even display selective mutism, speaking not at all to most people and excessively to specific people. Some may choose to talk only to people they like.

Another Kim~~ Suhanmoo moment…

First of all. Thanks a whole lot for writing and explaining Kim – Suhanmoo. Second – I had the same reaction to the sad ending. To know that the name was made purposedly long so that it could extent the life of the bearer and then to find out that because of its length the bearer died. LROF funny.

Oh this sounds like a story I read as a kid… Who remembers “Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo”? (I looked that up on wiki… I only remember tikki tikki tembo. Lol) ^^”

    Thanks for the explanation!

There is a Chinese version that I read when I was young, and after many many years, I know it
“Rikki tikki tembo no sa rembo chari bari ruchi pip peri pembo.
    fell down a well”

The end of that story, he gets rescued, but his name was shortened.
That is why all Chinese names are so short.

Hi Zarina, thanks for sharing your durumi encounters! That reminded me of how Jongmin tried to fulfill his 1N2D mission of capturing an auspicious family of 4 on film (ep 366)… Here’s wishing all a happy new year!

Another snippet: The durumi graces the back of the 500 won coins… eh, you could keep one in your wallet for good luck maybe? ^
