“사람들은 제 얼굴이 예쁘다고 하는데 저는 잘 모르겠어요. 사실 고등학교 때 제 별명이 ‘쌍판’이었어요. 친구들도 제가 기생 오라비같이 생겼다고 했거든요. <성균관 스캔들>에도 비주얼 때문에 캐스팅됐죠. 어렸을 때 기억을 더듬어 보면 주위에서 하도 곱다고 말해주니까 저 스스로 그렇게 안 보이려고 행동했던 점이 좀 있었던 것 같아요.”

“People say my face is pretty.. I don’t know. To tell the truth, my nickname in high school was ‘Ssang Pan’ (‘face that is passe, out of fashion’). Because my friends felt that I looked like a ‘gisaeng orabi’ (‘feminine guy too concerned with his looks’). Well, I was cast in <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> because of my looks too. Thinking back to my childhood memories, I guess because people around me were always saying that I looked pretty, there had been times when I intentionally behaved on the contrary, so that I wouldn’t be referred that way.”

 “<성균관 스캔들> 이후 사극이 많이 들어왔어요. 사극은 힘들어서 이제 더 이상 못하겠다고 생각했는데, 이상하게 사극이 주는 섹시함이 있어요. 영상과 한복 빛깔 등에서 나오는 섹시함이요. 사극 대사가 주는 느낌도 묘해요.”

“After <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> ended, I received many sageuk (history drama) offers. I had initially felt that sageuks were too difficult, and was not intending to act in them anymore, but strangely, there’s a sexiness about sageuks. The sexiness that comes from the way they are filmed, the shimmer of the hanboks (traditional costumes) and all that. Even the lines from a sageuk evoke feelings.. that are special.”

“주변에서는 왜 지금 <뿌리깊은 나무> 아역을 맡으려 하냐고 말리는 사람도 있었죠. 하지만 저는 웬만한 미니 시리즈 주인공보다 도전할 만하다고 생각했어요. 태종이란 감옥에 갇혀 있다가 그걸 깨는 과정을 보여주는 게 제 몫이에요. 제가 깔아놓은 베이스가 있어야 한석규 선배님이 연기하는 좀 풀어진 모습의 세종이 받아들여질 수 있어요. 야사를 많이 봤어요. 우리가 알고 있는 세종 이미지와 다른 면을 많이 보여줄 드라마거든요. 세종대왕도 섹스를 좋아했어요. 본능에 충실한 사람이었고.”

 “Those around me questioned my decision to accept the youth role in <Deep Rooted Tree>, and there were people who tried to stop me as well. But personally, I feel that a challenging role is more worthwhile than being in a lead role of a mini series. It is my duty to portray the process of how Lee Do overcame the prison that Taejong entrapped him in. It is from this foundation that I laid, that senior Han Suk Kyu can rise further to develop the portrayal of Sejong. I read many unofficial historical accounts too. This is a drama which presents a Sejong that is different from what we are familiar with. Great King Sejong loved sex. He was also a person who was very true to himself.”

“콤플렉스 있는 게 배우에겐 더 좋은 것 같아요. 그게 없으면 고민할 게 없어지잖아요?”

“I guess it is actually more beneficial for an actor to have a (psychological) complex. If there wasn’t any, wouldn’t there be nothing to be troubled about?”

“남들이 배우를 평가할 땐 어떤 단계가 있다고 생각들 하는데 저는 그런 거 없다고 생각해요. 그냥 흘러가는 대로 가는 거죠 뭐.”

“인기를 얻으려고 그렇게 하는 건 단기적인 방법 같고요, 흔히 말하는 스펙트럼을 넓히는 방법 중 하나라고 봐야겠죠. 그런 추세에 따라가려는 건 짧은 생각이에요.”

“When others assess actors and actresses, they talk about the stage that person has reached, but I disagree (with this way of assessment). Well, I believe one just evolves gradually.”

“Aiming for popularity is a short-term goal – it can be regarded as one of the ways to widen our so-called ‘spectrum’. But it is rather short-sighted to follow this trend (of attaining popularity).”

“사회정의, 세계평화, 저는 이런 데 별로 관심 없어요. 모든 사람이 행복해지는 건 불가능한 일이거든요. 나와 내 주변 사람들의 행복만 생각하다 죽어도 짧은 생이에요.”

“Social justice, world peace, I’m not particularly concerned about these. Because it is impossible to make everyone happy. I only think about the happiness of the people around me and of myself; life is too short.”

“사람들이 으레 짐작하는 제 모습이 있잖아요. 막상 저를 만나면 생각과는 다르다는 얘길 많이 해요. 저 스스로도 그런 반응을 즐기고 재밌어 하는 것 같아요. 약오르지롱, 이런 거죠.”

“People often have an assumption of what I am like. When they eventually meet me, they often say that I’m different from what they thought I was. Personally I enjoy seeing their reactions and think it’s pretty interesting actually. It’s like.. ‘약오르지롱~~” ^^ (a cute taunt, like the stick-your-tongue-out ‘mellong’ 메롱)

“이거요? 제 사실은 얼마전에 이사를 했거든요.. 그래서 안그래도 요즘에 인터넷 여기저기를 찾아서 인테리어 소품들이 찾고 있었는데.. 이거 뺏어 가지면 안돼요? 감사해요 보그~”

“You mean this? To tell the truth, I moved not long ago.. That’s why these days I’m actually searching on the internet for interior decoration pieces.. Can I bring it home? Thank you Vogue~”
